Arizona public school principals have less than one week to submit their final application for consideration to be named a 2016 A+ School of Excellence™ school.
The A+ School of Excellence™ Program is a comprehensive school assessment program that celebrates outstanding schools and brings to light the positive stories and successes happening in public schools every day. The program is the only one of its kind in Arizona and was created by the Arizona Educational Foundation in 1983.
Its purpose is threefold:
- to identify and give public recognition to outstanding public schools in Arizona;
- to make available a comprehensive framework of key criteria for school effectiveness that can serve as a basis for participatory self-assessment and planning in schools;
- to facilitate communication and sharing of best practices within and among schools based on a common criteria related to success.
The Value of Recognition
Our A+ School of Excellence Program Director and Retired A+ School Principal Lyn Geake says, “This type of recognition toward schools is a rarity in the public school system here in Arizona, but much needed.”
“These A+ Schools have an incredibly unique school culture, administration, staff, and parent community that should be celebrated for going the extra mile for children.”
The Application Process
Schools submit applications that provide demographic information, a description of current programs and practices, documentation of parent and community involvement, a profile of the school’s leadership and commitment to excellence, equity, service.
Schools must demonstrate sustained high achievement or significant improvement through assessment data.
What Happens When a School Wins
Winning schools are recognized for their superior ability to identify and meet the academic and non-academic needs of their student population. Their status as an A+ School of Excellence™ lasts for a 3-1/2-year period after which time they must reapply for the award.
The selection panel that reviews applications and conducts site visits (January – April) includes award-winning principals, teachers and community leaders.
