Nicola is a 7th grader from Sunrise Middle School in Scottsdale. She represented Arizona in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26, 2016 — Arizona’s representative at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, 7th grader Nicola Ferguson of Scottsdale, incorrectly spelled ‘psyllium’ in the finals earlier this morning in Washington, D.C. Psyllium is a fleawort (or plantain).
Nicola was one of 45 finalists. The 45 finalists were narrowed down from 285 spellers ranging in ages from six to fifteen years old. This was Nicola’s first time competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
