This year’s Leadership Symposium, hosted in collaboration with the Arizona School Administrators and sponsored by Grand Canyon University, was filled with engaging breakout sessions from top principals and inspiring keynotes from education leaders.
From Program Director Lee Nelson
The Principal’s Leadership Academy of Arizona (PLAA) was founded seven years ago in response to a shared belief by the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF), university faculty, and numerous public school administrators in Arizona that novice and aspiring school leaders would benefit from a local leadership program. The contributing organizations decided to follow the 5 C’s: Cohort, Collegiality, Continuity, Community, and Collaboration as the guiding principles of the program.
PLAA facilitators include but are not limited to: University faculty, AEF A+ School of Excellence™ principals, AEF Board Members, National Distinguished Principals, Arizona Teachers of the Year and Ambassadors for Excellence, business leaders, community organization executives, and education policy makers.
This year’s program focused on the 2015 Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (formally the ISLC standards), research, concepts, and strategies associated with effective leadership and planning in education. Specific administrative levels of responsibility were identified and defined with emphasis on development of a vital school climate.
The A+ School of Excellence Program, A+ principal mentors, guest presenters, community and business leaders, and program facilitators helped participants understand how schools can successfully utilize effective schools research.
The 2015-16 PLAA sessions took place in the months between August 2015 and April 2016. Sessions were held at AEF™ Education Champion Platinum Donor, Argosy University, on Saturdays. Additionally, participants attended the first annual join AEF/Arizona School Administrators (ASA) Leadership Symposium in October, shadowed their mentors in December, and assisted in AEF’s A+ School of ExcellenceÔ site visits.
Since the start of this year’s program in August 2015, two participants have secured principal positions and one will be a student advisor for the coming school year.
