Each September we invite teachers and legislators to spend some rare one-on-one time together through our Take Your Legislator to School initiative.
In partnership with the Arizona K12 Center and the Arizona Education Association, AEF matches Arizona public school teachers with the legislators in their district.
Sen. Nancy Barto (R-15) and Pinnacle High School Teacher and 2016 AEF Arizona Teacher of the Year Ambassador for Excellence Mike Vargas spent Tuesday morning together. See the photos below from their visit.
Mike Vargas is a Physics Teacher at Pinnacle High School in Phoenix Arizona and is recognized as one of Arizona Educational Foundation’s four 2016 Arizona Teacher of the Year Ambassadors for Excellence. He is a graduate of Northern Arizona University and holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Trident University International along with graduate certificates in Educational Technology and Athletic Coaching .
He has been recognized as the ASTA High School Science Teacher of the Year in 2014 and is an advocate for Physics First in High Schools. Mr. Vargas has also served as a science instructor and Men’s head basketball coach at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons Belgium for ten years. He has coached in the European semi pros and junior college levels for the last 6 years. Mr. Vargas’s projects include a Near Space Team and a Drone Academy that he sponsors at Pinnacle High School.
Senator Barto served in the State House of Representatives for five years before her election to the State Senate in 2010 – representing Legislative District 15, which encompasses North Phoenix and Northwest Scottsdale. Senator Barto serves as Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee – focusing on health care and family-related issues. She has sponsored major health care reforms aimed at increasing affordable health insurance options, protecting patients’ fundamental privacy rights, the health of women and the unborn. Recognized as a consistent leader for Arizona families, Senator Barto has championed important medical tort, property tax and homeowner reforms and been a voice for reform in Arizona’s foster care and behavioral health systems.
