Scottsdale, Ariz., May 18, 2016 — The Arizona Spelling Bee Champion, Nicola Ferguson, will represent Arizona in the 89th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee May 24th – 26th.
Nicola is 13 years old and attends Sunrise Middle School in Scottsdale. This year was her first time competing in the state spelling bee where she out-spelled 26 other competitors, winning the bee with the word “recumbent.” Nicola and her parents will be traveling to the Scripps National Spelling Bee courtesy of the Arizona Educational Foundation.
The competition takes place May 24, 25, and 26 in the Maryland Ballroom at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland 11 miles outside of Washington D.C. Admission to the Bee is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Every year we see the brightest and best spellers from every corner of our state compete for the title of Arizona Spelling Bee Champion,” said Arizona Educational Foundation Executive Director Bobbie O’Boyle. “We wish Nicola the best and hope that she enjoys her experience as Arizona’s representative at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.”
