teachSTEM

Fueling Arizona’s Next Gen Teaching Workforce.

teachSTEM Overview

AEF’s teachSTEM program is an innovative initiative designed to address Arizona’s critical shortage of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) teachers by inspiring high school students to pursue STEM teaching careers. It aims to build a pipeline of future educators who can return to their communities, enhancing local education and addressing workforce needs.

The program operates as an early intervention, introducing students to STEM education and career opportunities while highlighting the importance of STEM teachers. It’s led by current and former AEF Arizona Teachers of the Year and finalists, as well as other master STEM educators. These experts mentor students in high school programs like Education Professions, Early Childhood, Career Pathways, and Educators Rising, which focus on developing future teachers and exposing students to STEM skills.

Key features include:

Started in 2019 with four schools, teachSTEM now operates in 63 classrooms statewide.  With widespread STEM teacher vacancies in Arizona, the program tackles a pressing need—thousands of students lack full-time math, science, and technology teachers annually.

By inspiring students to become STEM educators, teachSTEM aims to strengthen Arizona’s education system and economy.
